I have asked this question in rooms for years and the answer is always the same, and it always takes people by surprise when they hear themselves say it.
I ask: has anybody, ever, heard the thing you keep confessing?
Not God. God has heard it a thousand times, and that is not in question, and I am not doubting anybody's confession. I mean has a person ever heard it. One person. Out loud, in a room, with a face.
Almost nobody says yes.
And what strikes me every time is the shape of what people are carrying. It is very often not enormous. Frequently it is something that another human being would have absorbed in about eleven seconds and thought nothing more about. But it has been said in the dark, only to God, for eleven years, and in the dark it has grown.
There is a verse about this and the church has quietly retired it, mostly because it is uncomfortable, and the people it would help most are the ones it never reaches.
What the verse says
Here it is, and it is short.
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. (James 5:16, King James Version)
One to another. Reciprocal. Not to an office and not to a professional, and the verse assumes ordinary believers in a room together.
Now let me say what it does not say, because this instruction has been abused and I am not going to hand anybody a rod.
It does not say that God's forgiveness waits on a human hearing. That is settled elsewhere and settled completely.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)
Faithful and just. Not conditional on a witness. So nothing in James is adding a step between a person and God's pardon, and if anybody has taught you otherwise they were wrong.
What James is describing is something else, and the word he attaches to it is not forgiveness. It is healing.
You have already been forgiven for the thing you keep saying in the dark, and the pardon has never once waited on anybody hearing it (1 John 1:9), and it is the Spirit who separates a settled forgiveness from an unhealed place so that a person can stop confusing the two.
Why saying it where somebody can hear changes it
Here is the mechanism, and it is not mystical.
A secret does not stay the same size. Anybody who has kept one knows this. Held alone, in the dark, over years, a thing grows in a way that has nothing to do with what it actually was, and the growth is invisible because there is nothing to measure it against.
The moment it is said out loud to another person, it gets measured. Not by their judgment. By their reaction, which is almost always smaller than the one a person has been having in private for a decade.
You have been living beside a measurement nobody has ever checked, and Psalm 32 is where the cost of that silence is described rather than in anybody's psychology, and the Spirit is the one who arranges the moment a thing finally gets said where it can be heard.
David describes what the silence itself did to him, physically.
When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. (Psalm 32:3)
Bones waxing old. Roaring all the day long. That is a description of a body under the strain of a thing not said.
You are carrying something at a size it earned in the dark rather than at its actual size, and Psalm 32 describes the cost of the silence rather than the cost of the sin. The Spirit is the one who brings a person to a point where they can finally say it where it can be heard.
Who, and how much
I am going to be practical, because this is exactly where people get hurt and it is worth being careful.
Not everybody. James says one to another, not everybody to everybody, and a room is not owed anybody's history.
Choose somebody who has demonstrated that they can hold a thing. Not the most spiritual person you know. The most discreet. Those are frequently not the same person and everybody knows who is which.
And nobody is required to say all of it. One true sentence is a beginning, and a person who says one true sentence and finds it survivable will say more when they are ready.
If what you carry involves harm to somebody else, or anything where another person's safety is in it, take it to somebody equipped: a pastor you trust, a counselor, or the appropriate authority. That is not a lesser path. It is the right one.
And this belongs here plainly. If the weight of this has taken you somewhere darker than shame, where being here at all has come into question, do not sit with it tonight. Tell a doctor, a counselor, a pastor you trust, or call the 988 crisis line if you are in the United States. Going is strength.
You are not obliged to hand your whole history to anybody, and Scripture never once asks for that (Galatians 6:2), and it is His Spirit who shows a person which one sentence to say and to whom.
So say it to God tonight, and then say one true sentence to one safe person this week.
You have been forgiven already, and the pardon is finished whether or not another human being ever knows (1 John 1:9), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the healing James talks about something separate and still available.
Now the counterfeit, and around a long kept secret it is at its most convincing, so learn its shape. It says: if they knew, they would look at you differently, and you would lose them. That is vague, it names you rather than an act, and its only instruction is to keep the silence. Conviction from the Holy Spirit names one specific thing and it comes with a way out attached, and here the door is one person and one sentence.
You are already carried by people who do not know, and Galatians tells the church to bear one another's burdens, which assumes the burdens get said out loud (Galatians 6:2), and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept somebody trustworthy near you for exactly this.
Nothing on this page promises the feeling changes. The man who waited nineteen years says he still does not feel much about it, and he tells the story flatly. What is settled is that the pardon was never waiting on a witness, that the silence has its own cost, and that a thing said out loud has stopped growing in the dark.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud. You speak here as somebody in Christ, so the standing behind it belongs to you and was handed over rather than assumed. God settled the pardon in one verse and put the healing in another, so speak to the secrecy that has been growing something in the dark for years. Say what is written, and then let it stand in His timing rather than yours.
- Secrecy I have kept around this, you are not reverence and you are not what keeps me clean. The Word of God says if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive, and the thousand times I have said it in the dark never once delayed that.
- Size this has grown to in the dark, you are finished in the name of Jesus. Scripture says when I kept silence my bones waxed old, and it describes the cost of the silence rather than the cost of the thing.
- Father, James 5:16 says confess your faults one to another that ye may be healed, and it calls that healing rather than pardon. I say it to You tonight, and I thank You that Your Spirit has kept somebody trustworthy near me.
James 5:16
