I have asked a lot of people a question that sounds strange until they answer it, and almost nobody has to think.
I ask: what time is it?
Meaning, when it goes wrong for you, what time of day is it. And people answer immediately. Six in the evening. The hour after school pickup. Late morning on a Saturday. Between finishing work and getting home. The hour after everybody else has gone to bed.
Nobody says they do not know. That is what strikes me every time. They know the hour, and often the room, and often what is usually happening in the house when it starts.
And then I ask the second question, and the second question is where it goes quiet.
I ask whether they have ever prayed about that hour at any time other than afterward.
He said it before, not after
In the garden, hours before everything came apart, Jesus says something to men who were about to fail badly, and the timing of it is the whole point.
Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. (Mark 14:38, King James Version)
Lest ye enter. Before the entering. He is not standing over them afterward explaining what went wrong. He is standing in front of them beforehand, telling them what to do with the hour that is coming.
And then the second sentence, which is the part that shows what kind of man is speaking. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.
That is not a rebuke. It is a description, and it is a generous one. He is telling them, in advance, that the willingness is real and the strength is not, and He does it without contempt.
You have a Lord who names the weakness in advance and without contempt, and He said it to men who were about to fail within the hour (Mark 14:38). The Spirit is the one who makes a sentence like that land as kindness rather than as a prediction of failure.
Why nobody prays before
There is a mechanism here and it is worth naming, because a person cannot work with something they cannot see.
Before the hour, the trouble is theoretical. Nothing is pressing, nothing hurts, and there is no urgency, and prayer is not usually generated by theory.
After the hour, the trouble is vivid and the urgency is enormous, and so that is when everybody prays. The praying is real and it is not wasted, and I would not discourage one word of it.
But it is happening at the one point in the cycle when nothing can be done.
And there is a second thing, and it is gentler than it sounds. Praying beforehand requires admitting in advance that it is likely, and that admission is uncomfortable in a way that praying afterward is not, because afterward it is already established.
You are permitted to admit in advance that something is likely, and Scripture treats that as ordinary rather than as defeatism (Matthew 26:41), and it is His Spirit who makes an honest sentence like that possible at four in the afternoon.
The category this article sits in is about a petition, and the petition asks God to keep. It does not ask a person to hold. That distinction is the whole difference between what is being said here and the version of this teaching that leaves people exhausted.
You have never been the one holding, and the request in that petition is addressed to Him rather than assigned to you (Matthew 26:41), and that part belongs to the Holy Spirit, who does the keeping through hours a person could not have held on their own.
The keeping is His
Everything in this subject turns on who is doing the holding, and Scripture is not ambiguous about it.
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. (Psalm 121:3)
He that keepeth thee. The keeping is a job with a holder, and the holder is named, and the psalm goes on at length about how He does not sleep.
And Paul says something about the shape of it that is more practical than people notice.
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
Make a way to escape. That is a thing God does rather than a thing a person finds by being alert enough, and the verse says He makes it with the temptation, which means it is already there when the hour arrives.
You have a way out that is made rather than found, and Scripture says God makes it and puts it there with the thing itself (1 Corinthians 10:13). That work is the Spirit's, and He shows a person a door that was already standing open.
And this belongs in every article in this category and it is never a footnote. If the hour you are describing takes you somewhere genuinely dangerous, for you or for anybody else, that is not for an article to hold. Tell somebody before it comes round again: a doctor, a counselor, a sponsor, a pastor you trust, or call the 988 crisis line, in the United States. Going is strength.
So name the hour, and pray about it now.
You have a keeper who does not sleep, and the keeping is described as His work rather than as your vigilance (Psalm 121:3), and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a person through an hour they could not hold themselves through.
Now the counterfeit, and around a repeated failure it is savage, so learn its shape. It says: you have prayed about this before and it did not work, and you are going to lose again, and everybody knows it. That is vague, it names you rather than an act, and its only instruction is to stop asking. Conviction from the Holy Spirit names one specific thing and always opens a door in the same breath, and here the door is fifteen seconds at four in the afternoon.
You are not being asked to be stronger, and the petition asks God to keep rather than asking you to hold (Mark 14:38), and it is the Spirit who is the one doing the keeping through every hour a person has ever come out of.
Nothing in this promises the next one goes differently. It may not, and the man who prayed at four says the first month changed nothing he could measure. What is settled is that the keeper does not slumber, that the way out is made rather than found, and that an hour you have already brought to God is not the same hour as one that arrives unannounced.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, and say them before the hour rather than after it. Christ is in you and you are in Christ, so the standing to speak over your own day is genuinely yours, delegated and never invented. God said watch and pray before the failure rather than afterward, and He named the weakness without contempt, so speak to the pattern that has kept your praying on the wrong side of the clock. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own policy, so say what God has said, and however He answers, leave the outcome to Him.
- Pattern of praying only afterward, you are not repentance and you are not the order He gave. The Word of God says watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation, and He said it before the hour rather than after it.
- Verdict that I am going to lose again, you are finished in the name of Jesus. Scripture says He that keepeth thee will not slumber, and the keeping in that psalm is His work and not my vigilance.
- Father, 1 Corinthians 10:13 says You make a way to escape and that You make it with the thing itself. I name the hour out loud tonight before it comes, and I thank You that Your Spirit does the keeping.
