The Very Hairs of Your Head Are Numbered, Which Is an Odd Thing to Say

I want to name a split that a lot of believing people are living with, and most of them have never put words to it.

They believe God is interested in their soul. Genuinely. They would tell you, and mean it, that He has settled their eternity and that He knows them and loves them and has plans that go past this life.

And they do not believe He is interested in Tuesday.

Not as a doctrine. Ask them and they will say of course He is. But watch how they pray. The big things go to God and the small things go on a list they handle themselves, and there is a line running through the middle of their life with the important things on one side and their actual week on the other.

I lived on that split for years and I did not know it had a shape until I read a verse about hair and could not get past it.

Where He says it

The sentence is not in a comforting passage. That is the first thing to notice and almost nobody does.

Jesus is sending His followers out and telling them what is coming, and it is grim. He talks about being delivered up, about councils, about families dividing, about being hated. It is one of the hardest stretches in the Gospels.

And in the middle of that, this.

But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. (Matthew 10:30, King James Version)

That is an odd sentence to put in a briefing about persecution. If a person were writing a speech to steady frightened messengers, they would reach for something about power, or about the outcome, or about God's justice.

He reaches for hair.

And the verse before it is about the price of birds, and the verse after it is a conclusion drawn from both.

Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. (Matthew 10:31)

The argument runs from a farthing's worth of bird, through a detail about a person's head, to a conclusion about their value. It is an argument built entirely out of small things.

You are known at a level of detail nobody would have thought to claim, and Jesus said it into a room of people about to have a very hard time, and Matthew 10 puts the counting of hairs between a sparrow and a conclusion about worth, and it is His Spirit who makes that land as nearness rather than as a curiosity.

Why He chose that detail

I have thought about the choice for a long time and here is where I have got to.

Hair is the least significant thing about a person. It is not their character, their work, their eternal destiny or their family. It is the most disposable item in the inventory, and it changes daily and nobody counts it, including its owner.

Which is exactly why it works as the example. He is not saying that God is keeping a careful record of important things. He is saying the record goes all the way down.

And Scripture does this elsewhere with the same instinct.

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? (Psalm 56:8)

Wanderings and tears. Neither of those is a spiritual achievement or a decision. They are the small physical residue of a hard life, and the psalm says they are recorded.

You have a life recorded at the level of tears and wanderings, and the recording is described as a book rather than as an impression (Psalm 56:8), and that part belongs to the Holy Spirit, who takes that from a nice line into something a person can pray on a Tuesday.

Where the split came from

It is worth asking how the line got drawn, because most people did not draw it on purpose.

Some of it is good teaching pushed slightly too far. We were taught, rightly, that God is not a vending machine and that faith is not about getting things, and a person who takes that seriously can end up believing that anything practical is a lower kind of request.

Some of it is embarrassment about scale. It feels absurd to bring a small thing to somebody enormous, and that absurdity feels like reverence.

And some of it is protection. A person who does not ask about small things cannot be disappointed about small things, and after a few disappointments a person quietly moves the small end of their life out of the conversation.

You are not being greedy or unspiritual by bringing a Tuesday, and the split you have been living with is not one Scripture draws anywhere (Luke 12:7). That work is the Spirit's, and He has been present in the half of your life you have not been discussing with Him.

I want to be honest about one thing here. Nothing about this makes the small things go well. God knowing the number of hairs on a head did not stop what was coming for the people He said it to, and most of them had extremely hard lives afterward. The verse is about being known, not about being spared.

Which is, if anything, the stronger claim. A promise of protection would have been broken within a decade for most of the men standing there. A statement about being known has held for two thousand years.

You are known rather than exempted, and being known is the thing that survived every one of their hard years (Luke 12:7), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a comfort rather than a disappointment in somebody who wanted the other promise.
